Western home builders dominate CHBA national awards

The Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) announced the winners of its 2018 National Awards for Housing Excellence at the Association’s 75th National Conference in Victoria, British Columbia late last month. These annual awards recognize builders from across the country who represent the best in new homes, new communities, home renovations, and residential marketing in Canada.

Of the 40 award categories, builders from Alberta and British Columbia took home over half, 23 to be exact. In fact, Calgary-based companies alone won home 12 new home, renovation, and marketing awards, including the night’s top two honours: the Design Excellence Award and Marketing Excellence Award. Calgary was not the only location to celebrate impressive results — Ottawa-based companies collected 9 awards.

Victoria builder wins more recognition for their NZE home
Local Victoria builder Falcon Heights Contracting Ltd. won the 2018 Net Zero Home Award for their ‘Synergy’ custom home build. This is, in fact, a follow-up to Falcon’s Heights having that same home being recognized by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) as the first qualified under its Net Zero Home Labeling Program back in May 2017.

Canadian Contractor profiled this home in June 2017, and spoke to company president Dave MacKenzie at the time about the challenges and cost premiums of moving to this high standard of energy efficiency. “We had to model the house through the EnerGuide software simulations 13 times to get it to meet Net Zero performance,” MacKenzie told Canadian Contractor. He estimated a premium of 12 per cent figure was the overall added cost of bringing this home to the Net Zero level versus his standard BuiltGreen® Platinum approach, after giving consideration to all the individual elements like windows, doors, insulation, and thermal breaks.

Another EnerGuide standard winner
Another striking home was the winner for the Detached Home under 2500 square feet. ‘Surf’s Up’, a new contemporary design built by Roadhouse Homes of Langley BC., was  also built to EnerGuide standards, and features a rear garage with roof-mounted solar panels.

CHBA outgoing president Eric DenOuden commented: “As a homebuilder, I appreciate what incredible effort it took to bring these projects to completion. Our 2018 Award finalists and winners are leaders in our industry, and they make us all very proud of their accomplishments. They truly represent housing excellence.”
